What type of collar should i use for my pit?

I have a 9 month old pit, still pretty small but I'm trying to teach her to walk by my side instead of her pulling all the time, the problem is I'm using a regular collar or a choke chain and she ignores the choking and keeps on pulling. Also when she does stop she ends up choking or makes hacking noises from all the chokin. I've heard I shouldn't use a harness either since they are made for pulling items and not good for general walks. I would greatly accept any recommendations that you have. Thanks in advance
