My car stereo has power but no sound?

i recently purchased an aftermarket stereo for my 97 ford ranger. It turned on but there was no sound. I bought the wiring harness and all the wiring seems to be correct. I connected a separate speaker to the stereo and it worked fine. when i plugged in the original stereo it worked fine.my ranger has premium sound. can anyone help?
