I just replaced my water pump on my 1972 85 HP Evenruide with electric shift,now I seem to be in forward gear.?

When I lowered the lower unit all I did was undo the shift wires that go to the lower unit shift ,drop the unit, replace the water pump and put it back together.Before putting in the gear oil and finishing I undid the spark plugs and hit the started.While the motor was spinning over I noticed it was turning the prop so I shifted it to neutral but the prop still spins in the forward way.I tried to shift it in reverse to with no luck.Now so far I have not started the motor or even put the gear oil back in it.I know for a fact that the shift worked fine before replacing the pump.Can anyone help me?
