Help with a head unit install.?

I'm lookin to get a new head unit for my car and definitely am not paying BestBuy $50 for an install. I watched a video and only thing is getting the right wire harness adapter. Can I unplug the radio from my car and plug the new head unit, or do i have to buy a new adapter and do a bunch of soldering stuff?
